Benefits Information
Alert: CMS has just finished rebuilding its website, so you may wish to visit it and explore. Go to My Benefits Marketplace to view your benefits and adjust your beneficiaries -- select State Employees and indicate whether you are a TRAIL member or not. You will be required to change your password -- they will now require a new password every year. A new page -- My Benefits Plus -- has been added with information about additional insurance products you might want -- pet insurance, home insurance, id theft insurance, etc.

For SURS participants who ARE eligible for Medicare, the Benefits Choice period is usually October 15-November 15.
For SURS participants who ARE NOT eligible for Medicare, the next Benefits Choice period will be late spring 2022 -- dates have not yet been announced.

State legislative watch
After the failure of the 2020 ballot initiative to amend the Illinois consitution to permit a graduated income tax, our state government is facing mounting deficits with fewer tools to manage them. Our state organization is monitoring proposals in Springfield and will keep us apprised of legislation that might affect SURS participants.

On May 8, 2015, the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously ruled Public Act 98-599 (Pension Reform) unconstitutional in its entirety. Once again, the state legislature will be under pressure to enact reforms that contain the costs of future pension obligations. Key issues of concern to our membership are summarized in these documents:

New SURS Director Addressed Spring Meeting

The SUAA-UIUC spring meeting was held on Sunday, April 24 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm via Zoom. After an informal chat session, President John Marlin opened the meeting and asked H. F. (Bill) Williamson to introduce the speaker, Suzanne Mayer, Executive Director of the State Universities Retirement System (SURS). Mayer was followed by Kristen Houch, SURS Director of Legislative and Stakeholder Relations, who presented a legislative update. A business meeting followed, with election of Executive Committee members (see bios of those elected) and various reports. The full meeting was recorded and can be viewed here. The slides presented by Mayer are here, and Houch's slides are here

Director Mayer was appointed to this position by the SURS Board of Trustees last December after serving as Interim Executive Director. She is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in business management and she holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Illinois Springfield. She has been with SURS since 2002 serving most recently as Chief Benefits Officer and Interim Executive Director. She is the first woman to lead SURS since Ruth Ellen Kunkel, the System’s original senior administrator who served from 1941 to 1952.
